Walking through the industrial streets of Digbeth, enjoying the artistry in the graffiti artists, we stumble across something even sweeter…
“Pirlo’s Invites you to take Afternoon Tea, daily from 12 noon until 6pm. It’s the perfect way to spend the day. Surround yourself with friends and family to enjoy Pirlo’s cool and classy surroundings.” [source]
Pirlo’s is a swanky Dessert Lounge in the Digbeth area of Birmingham. Surrounded by old factories, and industry, this little slice of decadence is a hidden gem.
Upon walking in, we were initially completely ignored by staff inside… which is a bit odd and made for a bit of discomfort to the start of our experience. Eventually someone came over to the “Please Wait to be Seated” sign to talk to us. We were apologised to, and they were quite happy to take our last minute booking for an Afternoon Tea. We were seated at a big plush copper sofa booth, and we were able to discuss my dietary requirements with the waiter. I always feel like this is a good test of an Afternoon Tea – how accommodating they are to vegetarians!
Our tea orders were taken promptly, and we both went for something a little different. Sweet Chai Lattes were on our menu today, Stuart went for the Peppermint flavour, and I opted for a Mango with the vegan option of coconut milk. These spiced lattes were so so so sweet! I have a sweet tooth, but even I thought these were a little too sickly and synthetic… and mine came with an add fly garnish on top, which was not so appealing. Luckily, the rest of the establishment was clean, and I was not TOO put off by one stray fly.
It took a little while for our food to arrive, but as we were in no rush, we were happy to relax and enjoy taking our time. The delicious food was well worth the wait. Stuart enjoyed his savoury layer of chicken tikka, and smoked salmon and cream cheese sandwiches, and I savoured my egg and cress, and cucumber options. I can be quite picky about my sandwich fillings, but both of my choices were really well suited to an Afternoon Tea. Next layer, scones! Plain scones, with strawberry jam, and clotted cream. An Afternoon Tea staple, and with homemade, warmed scones, it was a perfect layer. The final layer, and always my favourite, a fantastic selection of miniature cakes. We had Victoria sponges, carrot cake, macarons, and chocolate dipped strawberries. The whole selection was really tasty, and there was not a single cake I could fault!
A bit of a staffing issue, a few finer details ignored, and very sweet chai lattes, but on the whole delicious food, a comfortable, decadent atmosphere, and a fair price. Pirlo’s Dessert Lounge is a must-visit for those with a sweet tooth, just be prepared to wait awhile!!
